Last night went well, thankfully. Emerson slept all night until 5:15. She’s definitely warmed up the most with Chase, for which we are thankful for…but stiffens her body if Jeff or I pick her up.
While at breakfast this morning, Emerson sat on my lap while I fed her some porridge. She took several bites and then her lower lip started trembling again, then the tears came and she cried for most of breakfast. I know that she was use to her foster mom feeding her with a spoon and I wonder if she suddenly realized that I was not her. ☹ Her crying is soft and mournful…it breaks our hearts! Towards the end of breakfast, Chase pulled out a bouncy ball and started bouncing it softly. This seemed to delight her and soon she stopped crying and was somewhat entertained with Chase, even laughing and giggling a little.

Back in our room, she looked through picture books with Chase and was saying some of the animals in Chinese (at least the ones we know in Chinese…horse and dog).
We met with our tour guide this morning and went to the civil affairs office to do most of our paperwork for this week. When we came back, Emerson fell asleep in my arms for a little while. I loved it! She did fairly good from there, playing, entertaining herself with beaded necklaces, her snack cup, Cheerios….until…….She got ahold of the photo album that her orphanage director/ foster mom put together for us. I should have taken the photo album away, but I didn’t. Soon she saw a picture of her, with her foster mom holding her….the flood gates opened. Oh how I regret not taking it away before she saw the pictures! Jeff and I could not console her. She would have brief moments of being distracted by Chase, but then one look at me or Jeff and the flood gates would open again. Oh, how hard it is to grieve for her, but not be able to comfort her. I’ve found myself praying again and again for Jesus to comfort her in ways I can not comfort and to help me be patient.
Patience….Jeff and I always try to teach our children delayed gratification. But right now I want instant gratification. I want Emerson to love me, to smile at me, to feel comfortable with me….and the list goes on. Reality is that I need to be patient and faithful. Faithful to love, even when it’s not returned. Bonding takes time and I KNOW THAT…so why is it so hard to be patient? It’s only our first full day, for pete’s sake!
Emerson did finally calm down as I rocked her (I knew she was tired, too) and she fell asleep in my arms for 30 minutes or so and woke up crying again. Chase sat on the sofa and she sat beside him and quieted down, laying her head on his lap.

We had a couple more appointments this afternoon. Emerson did great, considering that she was still very tired. She allowed me to hold her most of the time and let Jeff hold her too. Afterwards we went to a Walmart to purchase a different sippy cup(she has drank very little (if anything) since we got her yesterday evening!...pray that she will stay hydrated) and a few other items. She never said anything throughout our appointments and Walmart( very quiet) and then fell asleep in my arms before we got back to the van.
One hour later, Emerson woke up(at 5:30pm) and cried for the next hour and 15 minutes. Finally she stood in front of Chase and plopped down on his lap and instantly stopped crying as she leaned back on him. She doesn’t always respond to Chase, but he definitely calms her the most. As we put her to bed, she seems like a completely different girl when it’s just her and Chase in the opposite room (we have a suite as “normal” hotel rooms here in China are TINY – about 350 SF). We’re thankful to have glimpses of what Emerson will be like once she’s bonded with us.
It’s been a rough day, but as Jeff has reminded me…Isn’t this what we expected it to be like? Yes, it is what we expected it to be like, but yet it’s so hard to go through.
Also, thanks so much to everyone for their comments. We can’t view the blog (we email the posts to Chelby’s cousin who posts them for us), but the comments are emailed to us. They are the highlight of our day!!

We are enjoying reading your posts and will be praying for you all. Sam would like to say that he missed Chase at church yesterday and that Emerson is cute! I'm so glad you have him there with you to help. That will be something really special for him to look back on.
Praying for all of you and for Emerson's tender little heart. She seems like she will be such a sweet snuggler when she begins to bond with you. What a doll she is!

Jeff and Chelby,
I just finally got caught up on your posts. We will be praying for your every interaction with Emerson - Xixi...Love that nickname!! May you be blessed with wisdom and longsuffering as you walk these days with her. And I love seeing little boys step up and be little men when they are needed...how great to see Chase give a glimpse of the man he is growing into.
Emerson is such a dolly! Yes it is hard, but as you stated in an earlier post, it is so worth it! We are praying for you and Emerson!!
Oh Chelby, Jeff, & Chase!!! How we are praying for you!!! Little Emerson is precious!! We are praying that she can feel your love for her!! Aubrey had a precious prayer for Emerson at the lunch table. The kids are doing good, but anxious to see you all too. Love & prayers,
Dad & Mom K
Jeff and Chelby,
Sandra told us about your adoption and travel plans, and encouraged us to follow along here. I am so glad I listened! We, also, are adopting from China, a little girl the same age as your Emerson, whom we have named Eliza Claire. (she will be two in March) Seeing this "real" glimpse into your travel and first days with Emerson is such a blessing. We will pray for you all as you continue to bond and adjust. Emerson is certainly a beautiful little girl!

I could hardly read this because I was tearing up so! Mourn with her...cry with her..."blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted"...that's a promise from God! Emerson will find comfort!
Praying for all of you!

We continue to pray for your precious family. I feel my lip quivering , too as little Emerson mourns for her former life. She must have a very tender heart which will someday bring you much joy.
Love you tons,
A Bonnie & U Denny
What a blessing Chase is there to instantly be big brother. She bonds to him like the other youngsters at the orphanage. I'm surprised you haven't taken her out for her first jog yet, though! What are you waiting for?! Hope and pray each day gets better and better for all of you! Take care now and keep looking to Him!
My heart just hurts…I cry right with her...and Mark and Barb are right - He will comfort her in ways only our gentle Savior can. Emerson will undoubtedly feel your love and will soon learn to trust you - Persevere - Love Will Win Her Over.
I have to comment again on how thankful I am Chase is there - reminds me of Queen Esther and how she was there to guide her people "For Such A Time As This". Chaser, I am so proud of you - you are providing a security for her in a time of fear. I love the picture of her laying her head on your shoulder - yet I see the sadness in her eyes.
You all were the topic of discussion at the blood drive today in Washington that we sponsored (AC church) So many of us are holding you up in prayer boldly before the throne.
Love to you all - Don, Sandra and Emily
Prayers and love to you across many miles! What a great experience for Chase! Can't wait to see her love unfold in the weeks ahead. God bless and stay safe. Tim and Barb
Oh, oh, oh! We are in love with Emerson! And yes, we too are praying for a comfort that only Jesus can give. This had to be such a difficult day...but God is faithful. Praying you feel the prayers~ We love you!
Praying for you all!

Tears again as I read your post. This entire experience is such a walk of faith.I am praying God will give you creativity as you begin to bond with Emerson - like Chase bouncing the ball and seeing her smile and giggle and when she falls asleep in your arms. I am thankful she is now starting to drink since we talked on Skype. Xixi is such a beautiful little girl with gorgeous big! brown eyes. Prayers for peace and bonding. Love, Dad & Mom S.(Grandpa and Grandma)
Love reading your blog. I pray for little Emerson's transition. How hard for a little child. You guys are amazing. She is lucky to have your family. It is so neat that Chase got to be involved in this experience. It shows his tender little heart. Love seeing your pictures. Safe travels home!

Prayers continue for all of you. May the Lord bring comfort to little XiXi's (love her nickname) little heart and mind. Take courage in these days. Praise the Lord! He is faithful. He will provide.
Thanks so much for writing, Jeff & Chelby! Praying God give you patience as you walk through the days of Emerson's grieving. So glad she does well with Chase!
Hang in there… this too shall end!

Tears for Xixi! How my heart breaks for her! So glad for Chase and that she turns to him for comfort. How sweet!!! This is something that Chase will never forget and hold dear to his heart forever! What an amazing lesson in love, compassion and patience. Will pray for sweet Xixi and all of you. And lets not forget to pray for her foster mom as well...I have no doubt she probably feels the same way as Xixi. Love and prayers!
My heart so breaks for all of you! The pictures of Emerson Xixi (so cute :) ) and Chase are so precious. Aren't you soooo thankful God led you to take Chase with you? There is something little people can offer in comfort and connectedness that big people just can't until they are trusted. I'll definitely be praying for her sweet little heart & Chase's continued resilience in China (sounds like he is doing fantastic - big praise!). I'm praying God works in Emerson's heart to knit all of you together & that you continue to get enough little glimpses into God's working to encourage your heart.
Oh goodness Chelby...the tears flow as I can only try to imagine the emotions on both sides. My heart breaks for Emerson as I know her world feels very broken right now. And yet I CAN NOT wait to love on her :) praying that she feels the love and prayers and so thankful for your willingness to open your arms to the helpless. True religion, it's so clear as I witness this story! Love you guys!
Heart breaking....praying earnestly for you guys. Thanks for sharing. Psalm 40:1 "I waited patiently for the Lord, he inclined to me and heard my cry." Praying you can physically feel God inclining to you.
