{China #9} Guangzhou

{Note: due to the Sauder's busy day flying to Guangzhou, they didn't have a blog post prepared until today. Don't forget to read "Update #8" first... scroll down! -Sarah}

Again, Emerson did well at breakfast.  I didn’t know what she was going to be like, being in a new area.  I can’t imagine how confused she must feel at times.  Flying, new hotel, new area, new surroundings.

Guangzhou is in Southern China and is more tropical.  Right now it’s a bit cold for them (go figure!), but it’s supposed to warm up to the 60’s and 70’s for tomorrow through Tuesday.

We had a morning Dr.’s appointment.  All the adoptive families have to have this done, so there were many American faces with their adopted child.  Most of the children cried as the nurse or dr. would check their pulse, ears, weight, height.  We didn’t stand chance that Emerson was going to get through this without crying.  It was hard to see her fight the nurses, scream and cry…but thankfully she calmed down once we were completely done and back in the van.  From there she seemed to bounce right back.  She’s continued to get into everything….the hotel phone, gum in my purse (no she didn’t eat it)…loves the TV remote.

{Eating lunch}

Emerson continues to warm up to me and willingly allows me to hold her (unless she wants to go a different direction!  Typical two year old!)  But at the same time, she has moments when she wants NOTHING to do with me.  Other than last night, “flirting” with Jeff, she still has yet to warm up to him.  PLEASE continue to pray that she can trust us.

All day, we’ve been trying to explore and figure out our surroundings.  We’ve been to this city before, but the hotel we stayed at last time is under renovation and completely shut down. ☹  As Jeff and Chase were out and exploring, I was back with Emerson, trying to put her down for a nap.  She fought and fought the nap…and she won.  I have to be truthful, I’ve struggled with selfishness today.  I’ve been feeling the need for a break, to be completely by myself, to recharge and rejuvenate.  When she wouldn’t nap, I wanted to cry.  I SO desperately wanted some quiet time.  Again, I find myself praying, “Lord, either help her sleep, or give me the emotional strength to carry on.” Finally, 2.5 hours later, we tried again to put her down.  She fought and fought and finally sleep won….and I was able to hit the treadmill and burn off some frustration.

After more exploring, Jeff figured out the Guangzhou metro system!!  I’m so proud of him!!  Now that gives us more options…yes we could use a taxi, but that can get expensive after a while.

{Riding the Metro}

Tonight we all ventured out on the metro and went to a shopping center to eat at Subway.  Subway has never tasted SO good!  We went to a grocery store to get some fruit and crackers. And then rode back on the metro to the hotel.  The round trip for the metro for all 4 of us was $2…I say, pretty good!

Tomorrow we meet with another family (that used the same agency as us) and go to the Safari Park.  It will be good to have fellowship with another family.

I don't think I've ever been so happy to hear that Emerson is doing all the normal 2 year old things - getting into your stuff, etc.

And flirting with Jeff. Wait till she figures out that her daddy is a puffball and his heart is melted around hers!! She'll be all over that!!

And I'm feeling a little bit guilty for writing the post about needing an update. I just couldn't stand it any more! I must say though, it worked and you gave an update. Sorry…sorta! :)

So thankful (and cool) that you could see Abram's orphanage. That had to almost be surreal!

The picture of just Chelby and Emerson in front of the rock garden was SO precious. Breathtaking, the scenery and Mom and daughter!

I can't get over seeing Emerson with chopsticks. I'm still struggling with a knife, fork and spoon!

I had to laugh at Chelby's comment about the treadmill. That burns frustration for her. It CAUSES frustration for me!!!

So thankful for God's mercy and the heartfelt prayers to carry you all through the last two days. I wonder what Chase is thinking, seeing all these new surroundings at such a young and impressionable age. Very special for him!!!

Continue to pray for God's grace and mercy for your family. Look forward to the next post! Take care now.

So very, very good to read your post of yesterday and today. We've been saying lots of prayers for all of you! How wonderful that Emerson is warming up to you, Chelby, and soon it will be Jeff's turn! I love to see her relaxed, smiling and being like a 'silly' two year old. She is precious! Thankful beyond words that the plane ride went well, you got to see where Abram lived,Chase is getting a breather from 'motherhood', you were able to run on the treadmill and Jeff was able to figure out the Metro. I think you are having your own sort of Olympics, lots of grueling 'keepin at it' and then you all get a breather!!AND I might add: a GOLD mnedal!! PTL! Love & Prayers, Dad and Mom S.(Grandpa & Grandma)

Praise God for a good travel day! & warming up more to you, Chelby (and even funny smiles with Jeff :))... how awesome!! I'm sure Chase appreciates her relaxing more too :)

And Jeff- you ROCK! Seriously, figuring out the Metro?! We walked through the tunnels (in order to safely cross the street and get to a park), but seriously... actually using it?!?? I sit in wonderment :)

Thanks again for the updates!

We keep praying for bonding and safe travels for you guys! Love you!!

I loved every picture from day 8. Every one was either precious (chase and Emerson) or just beautiful (the one of you and Emerson at the end especially). I am so grateful too that things seem to be settling in for you all. Still praying for you all a lot especially as you start to plan for your travel back to the states soon! Love you all!

I don't have a lot to say other than how happy I am and prayerfully thanking Jesus for each small and big success you have with Emerson. Praying for your mental and emotional strength during the hard moments and also praying that the joy of each little good moment can help sustain you and uplift you. I am so happy for your family and my heart just sings and floods with joy for you guys and Emerson too.
